Dr Martin Campbell is a dedicated specialist and Obstetrician-Gynaecologist who provides compassionate, individualised and evidence-based care to individuals and couples navigating their fertility journey.

Martin first fell in love with Australia in 2010, when he travelled from the United Kingdom to complete a medical elective in reproductive medicine. It was during this experience that he decided to pursue a career supporting fertility patients and resolved that, one day, he would return to Australia as a qualified specialist. After completing his specialist training in the United Kingdom, Martin moved to Australia with his family in 2023.
Martin graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Obstetrics from Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2011. He completed his specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2022. His training took him from Newcastle in North East England to Dundee in Scotland, where he held an academic and clinical position with the University of Dundee and Ninewells Hospital. During this time, he undertook research published in collaboration with the World Health Organisation and completed clinical training in fertility and reproductive health.

Martin believes patients should be treated with the same care, respect and communication that he would wish to receive himself. He takes a personalised and holistic approach, working collaboratively with each patient to develop a treatment plan that reflects their individual circumstances, preferences and fertility goals.

Accessible healthcare and the support of a coordinated professional team are central to Martin’s approach. He is particularly committed to ensuring that people living in regional areas of New South Wales can access high-quality fertility services. Martin will provide fertility care in South West Sydney at Gregory Hills, alongside his work within the public hospital system at Goulburn Base Hospital.

Martin is committed to equitable and inclusive healthcare and welcomes patients through the City Fertility, First Step Fertility and Rainbow Fertility programs. He also brings profound personal empathy to his work, having experienced fertility treatment while creating his own family with his Husband through surrogacy in the United Kingdom. This lived experience informs his understanding of the emotional, practical and clinical complexities of building a family and reinforces his commitment to ensuring every patient feels heard, informed and supported.

    Q&A:
    1. What drew you to specialise in fertility care?

Dr Campbell: It has to be down to that fateful medical elective, in 2010, when I came to Syndey to explore fertility care, alongside Obstetrics and Gynaecology. It cemented, for me, that this was the speciality for me and ‘One Day’, I said I would come back to Sydney, qualified.

With the family unit being the focus of care, being permitted to assist and be part of such a huge life decision, is special. It is more than special and hard to describe but what I do know is that I truly enjoy the professional relationship that invariably permits such personal conversations between myself and you. The personal satisfaction that comes from helping others with their treatment options, interventions and helping to guide decision making at important junctures of care, is what has drawn me to specialise in the field.

    2. How would you describe your consulting and care approach?

Dr Campbell: Safe, informed and shared decision making is the minimum I would expect, if I were a patient, this, you can expect from me. The interpersonal relationship, follow up and invested approach to achieve your own personal fertility goals, is what you will also receive.

Excellent fertility care starts with understanding the person or couple in front of me — their history, concerns, goals and what matters most to them. From there, I aim to explain the options clearly and develop a plan together that feels achievable, appropriate and tailored.

    3. What can patients expect when seeing you for a fertility consultation?

Dr Campbell: A professional, relaxed consultation that should permit personal conversation to flow and for those sensitive conversations to develop in a safe space, with direction provided. If the involvement of other multi-disciplinary team members are required to optimise your outcomes or indeed assist in the shared decision making process, onward referral will be facilitated. My goal is for every patient to leave the consultation with a clearer understanding of their options and a plan that feels personalised, realistic and supported while aiming to facilitate a seamless pathway to treatment.
