Preparing for an appointment with your fertility doctor

How do I make an initial appointment with a City Fertility specialist?

fertility appointmentWhether you have seen other fertility specialists or this is your first time, you will receive a personalised, comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.

The first step to access treatment at City Fertility is to obtain a referral from your GP in order to see one of our accredited fertility experts. You can download a City Fertility referral form and take it along to your GP appointment.

One way of obtaining a GP referral is by using Doctors on Demand. This is a 24-hour service that gives you access to Australian Registered doctors via video conference appointments. You can discuss your personal circumstances and get a referral to one of our fertility specialists from the privacy and convenience of your own home. Simply schedule an appointment via their website at a time that suits you.

Referrals from a GP last for 12 months, while a referral from a specialist is current for only three months. A current referral is required to claim the cost of specialist treatment through Medicare.

In order to help you choose your fertility specialist all of their profiles, including photographs, biographies and contact details, can be accessed via our Specialist team page. If you are unsure of whom you would like to see, please contact our Fertility Advice Centre on 1300 354 354 and they will be able to assist you in choosing which Specialist is most suited to your needs.

While you’re waiting for a referral, please do not hesitate to contact our Fertility Advice Centre. Our friendly staff will assist you in making your initial appointment. As long as the referral is dated before the date of your first specialist appointment, it is still valid.

The initial consultation

Your initial consultation with a City Fertility specialist will allow them to gather all the relevant information regarding your circumstances, medical condition and previous care to provide the direction for your future treatment.

Both partners are encouraged to attend this appointment.

Your specialist may recommend further tests and investigations which may include:

  • Semen analysis.
  • Laparoscopic surgery.
  • Blood hormone testing.
  • Pathology screenings.
  • Pelvic ultrasound.

If you have had tests done previously, or had treatment elsewhere, please bring along any information or results with you to this appointment. It is also imperative that you bring your GP referral letter to this appointment in order to be eligible for Medicare rebates.

Following your initial consultation, you will have a clear understanding of the next stage of your treatment and will be given instructions regarding further diagnostic testing.

Possible early treatment options

Not all couples will need to proceed to relatively intensive treatment such as IVF. Your City Fertility clinician may recommend that you begin with more conservative infertility management such as Ovulation Induction or Artificial Insemination cycles. Please refer to our Fertility treatment section for further information regarding these procedures.
