Getting started

What to Expect on Your IVF Journey

Starting Your IVF Journey

IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is a treatment where eggs are fertilised with sperm outside the body, then transferred to the uterus to achieve pregnancy. If you’re preparing for IVF, the first step is to book an initial consultation with a fertility specialist. Booking an initial consultation allows our team to understand your needs, begin tailored fertility testing, and discuss the options that are right for you. Remember, before your specialist appointment, you’ll also need a referral from your GP, which allows you to be eligible for Medicare rebates.

You can book an appointment online here, or by calling the Fertility Advice Centre at 1300 354 354.

What Is IVF and How Do I Get Started?

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Get Your IVF Journey Started

If you’re getting started on your IVF journey, the first step is to contact our Fertility Advice Centre to book your appointment. You can reach out by phone at 1300 354 354, email at contactus@cityfertility.com.au or via our online booking form. Our friendly team will help you book your initial consultation and explain what to expect.

At your initial consultation, your fertility specialist will take the time to understand your medical history, review any previous test results, and, if relevant, discuss your partner’s background as well. It’s helpful to bring along any relevant documents to ensure a tailored experience. This consultation is an important starting point in your personalised fertility treatment plan. From here, we’ll guide you through next steps and provide ongoing support throughout your IVF journey.

To access Medicare rebates for fertility services, you’ll need a valid GP referral, so we recommend arranging this ahead of your appointment. You can do this, either with your regular GP or via an online platform such as Doctors on Demand.

Initial Consultation

Whether you’re just starting your IVF journey or seeking a second opinion, City Fertility offers a personalised, expert-led approach to diagnosis and treatment. To get started:

  • Select your fertility specialist by browsing our Specialist Team page, where you can view profiles, photos, and contact details. If you’re unsure who to see, our Fertility Advice Centre on 1300 354 354 can help match you with the right doctor.
  • Obtain a referral from your GP to see one of our accredited fertility specialists (referrals are valid for 12 months).
    • Book an appointment with a City Fertility GP: You can also book a free fertility health check with a City Fertility GP for a referral, to start fertility testing and better understand your reproductive health.
    • Use Doctors on Demand if needed, which is a 24/7 online service offering video consultations with Australian-registered doctors who can provide a referral from the comfort of your home.

You can still book your initial appointment while waiting for the referral. As long as the referral is dated before your consultation, it will be accepted for Medicare rebate purposes.

Preparing Emotionally and Mentally for IVF

Starting IVF is a deeply personal journey, and it is completely normal to feel a mix of emotions such as hope, uncertainty, anxiety or excitement. Taking care of your mental and emotional wellbeing is just as important as the medical process. Whether it involves speaking with one of our specialised ANZICA registered fertility counsellors, joining a support group, or making time for self-care, remember that you are not alone. The City Fertility team is here to support you every step of the way.

Don’t Wait – Know When to Seek Fertility Advice

Typically, we recommend you seek medical advice if any of the following apply:

  • If you are under 35 and haven’t conceived after a year of trying.
  • If you are over 35 and haven’t conceived after six months of trying.
  • If you have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility by your doctor.
  • If you have a known cause of infertility such as PCOS or endometriosis, irregular menstrual cycle or absent periods.

Please keep in mind that fertility is individualised, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why having a dedicated fertility specialist who understands your unique needs and challenges is so important. They will work with you to create a treatment plan just for you.

Understanding Cost and Payment Options

Understanding IVF cost is an important part of preparing for IVF. At City Fertility, we offer transparent pricing and a range of IVF payment options, including payment options and access to superannuation, to help make treatment more affordable. If you have a valid GP referral, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates and the Medicare Safety Net, which provides additional support once your out-of-pocket expenses reach a certain level.

Book an appointment to discuss your options and get started with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to book my first fertility appointment?

You can book your first appointment at City Fertility without a referral. However, to access Medicare rebates for fertility services, you will need a valid referral from your GP addressed to one of our accredited fertility specialists. GP referrals are valid for 12 months and can be arranged before or after you make your booking, as long as the referral is dated before your consultation.

What should I bring to my initial fertility consultation?

To make the most of your first appointment, we recommend bringing any previous test results, medical records, and details of your menstrual and reproductive history. If you have a partner attending, their medical history is also helpful. A GP referral is needed for Medicare rebates, and bringing a list of questions or concerns can help guide your discussion with the fertility specialist.

What happens during the initial consultation?

During your initial consultation, your fertility specialist will review your medical history, discuss any previous tests or treatments, and talk through your current concerns and goals. You may be asked about lifestyle factors, reproductive health, and any known conditions. This appointment is the first step in building a personalised fertility plan, and you’ll also can ask questions and learn more about next steps.

How do I get started with IVF at City Fertility?

To begin your IVF journey, start by booking an initial consultation with one of our fertility specialists. You’ll also need a referral from your GP to access Medicare rebates. Our team will guide you through every step with care and ongoing support.
